Was it She who beckoned us, as our aged car laboured & bemoaned the treacherous grade?
I have found, after following many such alternate paths, that they all share something in common.
So close to the Sun, the light seems cold. The winds threaten to take us aloft & deposit us in a distant land.
Alternate paths seem to place themselves before us so that we might stumble upon their Secrets & be reminded of just what it is to be Alive.
Beautiful Secrets lie behind the warning signs, beyond our fears... |
Monumental Secrets which will forever elude the camera.
Secrets captured & held forever, only by our memories.

Whenever I drive somewhere, I prefer to take back roads, instead of the highways. There is more scenery, more small things I am meant to discover along the way - like a farm with ducks and horses out on pasture, or a tulip poplar with particularly beautiful color in the autumn. And you're right - taking those alternate paths, I feel more alive :)
Isn't it wonderful? Funny though, we had been aware of this road for several years now, yet we had never made the commitment to take it. The Little Lad suggested it from the backseat with his nose buried in the road atlas. I confess, I hesitated because it was an "unknown" & my old friend the Volvo, well, she is very old. She was a trooper on that 13% grade though & *gasp* what we found was incredible! There was no way to communicate it here, really. I do believe we shall take that road again & again... but perhaps we'll use a different car. ;)
I always want to take "the long way home", even if that only means an extra five minutes wherein I might stumble across some omen or natural beauty.
I feel that want also, although I admit, children have a certain quelling effect to the wandering sometimes. ;)
Do you ever get the feeling you are being drawn to "the long way," as though you are being beckoned in that direction so that you might come across the omen, message or beautiful discovery?
