Pray to the Moon when She is round,
Luck with you will then abound,
What you seek for shall be found
On the sea or solid ground.

Old School Humor: Pagan Cowboy Joe

Envision a cowboy sporting boots, spurs, mustache & hat, sitting fireside, strumming his guitar. Beside him a woman roasts a marshmallow. On his hatband he wears a crescent moon, horns up. He is singing the following ditty:
"I see by your outfit that you are a Pagan
with black-hilted dagger and black-hooded robe.
A ritual cord, it encircles your waistline.
A pentagram earring resides in each lobe."

"Oh tell me, do you know of Gardner and Crowley,
of Izzy Regardie, and Alex the King,
of lovely Di Fortune and Charles Godfrey Leland --
about them nobody can tell me a thing."

"For Pagans today have turned trendy new ager,
with quartz crystal knick-knacks and tapes by the score.
Enlightenment's yours in just twelve easy lessons.
If that doesn't work, come and purchase twelve more."

"Oh, give me the life of an old-fashioned Pagan,
though bell, book, and candle are sadly passe.
Let others chase after their cosmic potential --
I'll mosey along in my old Wiccan way."
I just picked up Green Egg Omelette, An Anthology of Art & Article From the Legendary Pagan Journal. I had forgotten about "Pagan Cowboy Joe," a comic strip by Jana Hollingsworth once featured in the Egg. What delight to be reacquainted (albeit briefly --  there is only one strip in the Omelette) with Hollingsworth's clever humor. I love this one -- so funny & true it's sad.

completely awesome and utterly heart-rending at the same time because it is so true.
